The Lake Races are part of the “Mix and Match” programme of sailing.
For those racers who want a change from sailing round and round on short courses the Lake Race Series is providing an answer for you.
For potterers who want some more excitement after lunch on Sunday the Lake Race Series is providing the answer for you as well. We start from the Cruiser start line in front of the club house and the dates are in the club programme. Everyone is welcome.
We have long start lines with no need for all the jostling and pushing-in that the dinghy and Formula 1 racers create.
Mostly, but not always, we sail up wind to start with. There is racing “upwind” and there is Lake Race “upwind”. We are sailing to windward of course but it is more relaxed with more time to enjoy the Lake before you turn around and head down wind.
“Downwind” can be spinnaker time if you have one and can remember where you put it the last time you used it. Unlike club racing you do not need to take the spinnaker down a few seconds after you have managed to find it and got it to fly. You can sit back and let the kite do the work. Maybe have a sandwich or two.
The spinnaker eventually has to come down. Make a note of where you put it this time! If we are by the dam or the tower we will have a left turn and head down into the uncharted waters of the Northern Arm. Not many go there even though thankfully all who have done so have returned to RSC safely. It is a different world down there.
There are fewer boats to contend with and even the fishermen are few and far between. There is a tower half way down and Barnsdale Country Club at the end. Go and enjoy the scenery.
When you come back, if the time is right, there will be a Cruiser Fleet cake or a BBQ to await you. Everyone is welcome whether you are racing or just dropping in to meet the other members.
The Lake Races are good fun. Come and join in and bring the sandwiches.
Sign on in the Cruiser Fleet race box before you go on to the water and you will find some Sailing Instructions and Course Sheets there. The race officer will give a briefing to explain the paperwork before you start. Lake Race Sailing Insrtuctions
If you are not a regular racer please ask for a handicap number before you sail.
