Rutland Sailing Club has one of the best inland sailing waters for accommodating Catamarans. With its extensive (3,100 acres) of water to play on it provides the ideal inland water playground for the high performance Catamaran. Here at RSC we like to make the most of these facilities with a full and varied programme of events for the Catamaran fleet.
There are coaching days like the ‘back on the water day’ and more formal coaching days run by the Rutland Sailing School exclusively for the cat fleet for those needed to improve their skills.
Of course there is competitive racing held each Sunday all year round and Thursday evening racing during the warmer seasons. The ‘Round the Lake Race’ series is a most popular and well supported series with upwards of 16 cats competing in 8 races utilising the whole of the lake.
We hold an annual open event each year in May with visiting fleets taking part over the weekend. Regular visitors are the Hurricane 5.9, A-Class and Dart fleets as well as a selection of other classes.
The highlight of the year for most fleet members is the Club’s ‘Catamaran Fleet Championships’. Fleet members of all levels of skill enter the event in a variety of cats from the humble Catapult/Dart16 to the latest flying A-Class or foiling speed machine. It’s held in November and crowns the ending of the seasons for many, although the more hardy sailors sail throughout the year.
The fleet is made up of a variety of different classes of cats with the A-Class single hander currently the most popular. – Racing is held on a handicap basis so all classes can join in -. In addition there are fast handicap boats such as the F16, Spitfire, and Shadow. There are of course the very popular Dart18 and Sprint taking part in racing. We also have the new Stunt S9 a foiling one design cat making its debut at the club with 2 new S1’s joining in 2017, an exciting new fast single hander.
Many members who do not like to race use their boats to cruise the lake on warm, sunny days and where better to do that than around this most popular venue making family days out a real treat?
You are always sure of a warm and friendly welcome when you meet the members of the cat fleet.
