Fleets and Groups: Who's your Rep and what do they do?

We are fortunate to have a wide variety of fleets and a varied range of active groups here at RSC.

Many of our groups and fleets are represented by a volunteer from within that fleet/group who holds the role of Fleet/Group Rep. This role helps to build a friendly, welcoming and inclusive environment and ensure that as a group their views are heard and needs met.

Currently, not all fleets and groups have a Rep.

We'd like to encourage any group or fleet that doesn't currently have a Rep, to either nominate someone they know to take on the role (with their permission) or to put themselves forward for the role.

Here are a few of the ways that a Fleet/Group Rep might help (these are just some suggestions, and there's no obligation to fulfil all these responsibilities)

  • Welcome new members to their fleet
  • Send regular mailings to share relevant information, act as a point of contact and encourage participation
  • Encourage knowledge share between the fleet/group
  • Help raise the profile of your fleet or group in the club and encourage participation from other members
  • Be on the fleet/group committee (if such exists)
  • Represent the views of their fleet/group at Sailing Committee regularly or on occasion
  • Organise fleet/group sailing activities and book appropriate resources
  • Organise some socials and club get togethers
  • Bring your fleet or group together in a section of the boat park, make recommendations about spaces to the office and assist with boat park audits for your fleet

The list of fleets and groups along with their current Rep for 2022/23 is currently:

  • Asymmetric: Vacant
  • Cats: Mikey Vernall
  • Challenger: Val Millward
  • Corporate: Vacant
  • Coxswains: Richard Perkins
  • Cruisers: Ron Day
  • Dinghy: Michael Aire
  • Hydra: TBC
  • ILCA: Damon Westwood
  • Junior: TBC
  • Keelboats: Hugh Neill

  • Sailability: Jonathan Schofield
  • Sailboards: Vacant
  • Schools: Ollie Hooper
  • Senior Sailing: Bob Smith

If you're passionate about the boat you sail or the activity that you love and want to help encourage others to join you, this is a great opportunity to do exactly that.

If you would like to put yourself forward, or nominate someone (with their permission) please contact us. If you would like more information or to discuss any aspects of becoming a Fleet or Group Rep, please get in touch via contact us or by phoning the office and we can answer your questions or arrange a meeting to discuss further.

Fleets and groups can ask to book club resources (e.g. RIBs and rooms) and have access to £50 prize money each year. They are recommended to Council annually by the Rear Commodore - Sailing (Damon Westwood) after consultation with Sailing Committee. If you are part of a fleet or a group that is NOT listed above and you would like to see it recognised and developed, please get in touch with Damon.
