In the UK the FOXER is best known in the south of England, especially in the Hamble River Sailing
Club, where it is raced enthusiastically. However, it has an international reputation, too. It appeared
in the mid-1990s, drawn by Hedley Bewes and David Thomas, whose previous designs include the
Sigma 33, Hunter 707 and BT Global Challenge yachts; David first designed the revolutionary RED
FOX, a plywood cruiser for home building with twin asymmetric lifting foils, a flat bottom and
pronounced chines. The GRP version RF200 Sea Vixen, appeared in 1992. The Foxer dinghy was
conceived as a handy and capacious 11ft tender built in GRP a few years afterwards, but the
enthusiasts had bigger ambitions. It now has a 52 weeks per year racing programme.
Midnights sail number (16) indicates that it is a Foxer Mk 1, built solidly in glassfibre. The Mk 2s
have a more exotic lay-up that uses balsa and foam cores. Both have deep, substantial hulls that sail
nimbly while offering a stable sit-in rather than a sit-on experience. The distinctive black, white and
red sail is sleeved onto a two-part mast. Midnights sail is in excellent condition. The hull has been
painted black. The two side benches have been raised to ease the previous owners advancing
years these could easily be returned to their original placements!
