Rutland ILCA (Laser) sailors out in force at Nationals

Congratulations to our youth sailors taking part in the ILCA Nationals down at Hayling Island this last week.

Rutland sailors picked up 1st U19 female and 1st U17 female a phenomenal achievement by Carys Attwell and Amelie Hacker respectively with them finishing 2nd and 3rd female overall ( 13th and 24th overall in a fleet of 115), with both of them getting a top 4 overall race result. In the boys Toby Smith was second U17 male in 11th overall .

Rutland finished with 5 sailors ( Toby, Carys, Jamie, Ben and Amelie) in the top 25, with all of them holding a top 4 race result a feat matched only by Stokes Bay SC. Harry Rowlands and Sam Lowbridge also made it into the Gold league in their first year of sailing the bigger rig.

In the Silver fleet Rutland dominated the last day. Dylan Beatty winning race 1, Harry Burge race 2 and Dylan again in race 3. With this amazing series Dylan went on to win the Silver Fleet overall again in his first year in the ILCA6. Issy Leetch sailed a consistent series to finish 4th overall in the Silver fleet. 5th U19 female in the overall competition. Harry Burge used his race win to spring to a very successful 9th in the Silver Fleet. Lauren Attwell also sailed a great series finishing 5th U17 female overall. Will Fearn extended interclub friendships and never had a smile off his face pulling together a good set of results all week. Immy Palmer got out on the first day but her skiing injury put pay to further sailing for the week but she stayed at Hayling partying hard with her friends.

Rutland topped the table on number of competitors in the ILCA6s with 11 out of a total of 114 sailors from across the country showing the strength in depth at our club. Not a bad set of results from a group of sailors who have spent most of the year focusing on their A-levels and GSCSEs. The week was punctuated by the long awaited GCSE results well done to all involved.

In the ILCA4s we had 2 of our successful Tera / Feva sailors step up into the boat just weeks before the event. Annabelle Hacker and Luke Rowlands took on the conditions to pull together great first time performances. In the 7s we had 2 familiar names in Terry Hacker and Ewan McAnally also performing well in tricky conditions.

Hayling Island once again gave varied conditions including sun, rain and lightning. A day without racing saw the SUPs out on the water and the obligatory float around in the tide, and pizzas on the beach.

Fiona Attwell turned the ILCA nationals into a holiday week holding the fort on the dance floor and leading the karaoke ably assisted by both Carys and Lauren.

Well done again to all our sailors and now either on to new adventures at University, or back to school. Where did the summer go?
