West Creek Moorings

The club commissioned the survey of 36 moorings in West Creek in February by the Red 7 team of divers with supervising and technical support. They used one of our committee boats as their dive vessel and were assisted by Malc, our Bosun, and Rob who, in a RIB, helped repositioning the dive boat. The weather was cold but not too windy, so diving was completed within two and half days.

The divers inspected the mooring buoys, boat tie off rings, the drop chain and two 'leg' chains that are secured to large anchor blocks that sit in the sticky lake mud! Only five of the moorings inspected had any issues, two of which were superficial as only the anchor blocks had moved slightly and a third with a broken shackle was replaced by the inspecting divers. Two issues will require some further dive work to replace a mooring 'leg' chain and repair a mooring buoy ring. Overall the chains showed little signs of wear and tear although they did have a lot of freshwater mussels growing upon them, all of which were removed.

This was the final phase of the survey of all of the moorings as required by the club insurers and of course for the peace of mind of the boat owners who moor in the creek.
