Ladies who Launch
Ladies Who Launch (LWL) is now a well-established part of Rutland Sailing Club. It was formed in 2010 for women who like to sail in a supported, informal and social environment. For ladies of all ages, skill levels and backgrounds, LWL offers an ideal learning opportunity, a great boost to sailing confidence and a chance to have fun out on Rutland Water. Ladies help each other rig, launch, recover, derig (even zip up those awkward drysuits!) and generally support each other every session. Over the last 11 years many ladies have invested in their own dinghies and relished the freedom and independence, (perhaps from other family members who hog the helm!) as well as sailing so much better.
Currently LWL members meet every Friday at 10.00am - 12.30 (ish) rigged and changed ready for a sailing session supported by Greg Baldock, the Senior Instructor at the Sailing School. Before we launch, Greg, who we class as an honorary lady in this role, briefs us regarding the aims of the session, picks our brains about what we can remember and sets the course to be sailed. Afterwards there is a debrief when more lessons are learned and more laughs over the mishaps! Then, as sailing makes us extra hungry, we have a "Bring and Share" lunch often on the balcony overlooking the water. Also in the summer months we might meet up more often for other RSC sessions, sail-aways and picnics.
After our Friday sessions we usually have a blog written by one of the group that goes out to all the LWL members, keeping everyone up to date. If you are new to sailing it is strongly advised that you take a sailing course at the Sailing School first. If you are just looking to get back on the water again in a friendly and safe environment, you are welcome to join us.
There is a small charge per session and if you don't have your own boat then Greg at the Sailing School can usually help for a further fee.
We've started a blog that you can read here! We also have a facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/RutlandLadies
